CHAPTER 22

MELODY

The man was way too cocky for my own good. The last few days I resisted his invitations. I managed to play it cool. I wanted to put some distance between us to let things cool down. It felt like things were moving fast. If I could get some time away from him, I could clear my head. I would not let lust rule me. I tried that but just walking back into the building I was thinking about dinner. More like I was thinking about dessert. Him. Just thinking about getting him naked had me all hot and bothered.

“That is one very charismatic man,” Gladys said. “If I was thirty years younger.”

“Gladys,” I said, laughing. “What would your husband think?”

“My husband would be impressed I noticed,” she said with a little laugh. “I’m old, not blind. I’m certainly capable of noticing a very attractive man. Don’t you think?”

“Don’t I think what?” I asked.

“Don’t you think he’s attractive?” she asked with a smile. “He certainly seems to think you’re hot stuff. He was looking at you like he wanted to—”

“Gladys!” She was going to make me blush. “Behave yourself!”

She was still laughing when I walked away. I hoped she didn’t share what she thought she saw with my father. The last thing I needed was my father meddling in that relationship that wasn’t a relationship. It was a thing.

“Dad,” I said and walked into his office.

He scowled at me. “I don’t know why you convinced me to hire an outside agency.”

“I didn’t convince you to do anything,” I said. “You hired them. I asked for an assistant or something like that. You took the meeting and hired the agency.”

“And I’m regretting that choice every damn day.”

“Why?” I asked and sat down.

His complexion was a little ruddy, which told me he was in a shitty mood. His doctor said he was in good health, but I still worried. I wasn’t sure he would ever admit he wasn’t in the best health. He was getting older and high blood pressure was sure to become an issue with the way he worked.

“I don’t like that guy,” he said.

“Why?”

“There’s just something about him,” he growled. “I can’t wait until this campaign is done. We will not be using him again. Ever. I don’t like guys that are slimy. He’s a snake.”

“Dad, that’s pretty harsh,” I said. “You don’t even know him.”

“I don’t want to know him,” he said. “Those kind of people are always slinking around.”

“He’s always been very polite,” I argued.

“I don’t want anything to do with him,” he said. “He’s your problem. I won’t be talking to him again. You’re in charge of that stuff.”

“Yes, I am,” I replied. “Sebastian mentioned you have been talking to his graphics designer. If I’m in charge, you need to let me be in charge.”

He stared at me, and I knew I might have pushed a little too far. “Fine,” he said. “I won’t interfere. I don’t want anything to do with it. I’ve already approved the material.
